Plans and activities for the Roma education in Macedonia Working sessions

Information for the public

On the 5th of April in the “Holiday Inn” hotel in Skopje at 9:00 o’clock we are organizing a Working session for solving of the problem with the Roma education on which representatives from government institutions, the local self government and Roma non governmental organizations will attend. Based on our so far activities, we consider that the Roma are still on the margins of the society’s living. The basic factors which bring the Roma in this position are the crisis through which this region passes, as well as the difficult financial and social condition. We consider that raising of a greater number of initiatives from the state, from European, world institutions and foundations (Roma Action Plan of OSCE, European Roma and Travelers Forum, The Roma Decade of the SOROS foundation and the World Bank and the National Strategy of the Project for ethnical relations – PER) conditions the necessary involvement of the Roma in the processes of these institutions for real actualization and finding of real solutions for the needs of the Roma population. The Roma issue needs to be actualized right this moment when the larger part of the Roma population still faces with covering of their basic human rights (prejudice, discrimination, marginalization), and Macedonia is aiming to enter in the European Union. NRC through its activities aims to contribute towards inclusion of the country in the European Union. In the following 10 years, in front of us, represents a great challenge to work within the frames of the Roma Decade. We would like to inform you that the National Roma Centrum is working intensively on improving of the condition with the Roma education through out realization of a campaign. The educational campaign acts on three levels

  • Motivation of Roma parents to include their children in the educational process. At this level data is being gathered for the degree of education of family members. Reasons are being considered for non visitation of schools, children are being evidented of pre school age, parents are being visited, after which reports will be done whose purpose will be to show the accomplished effect. The purpose of activities is raising the awareness of the parents about the meaning of education.
  • Cooperation with journalists and eminent representatives of Macedonian media. Within the frames of this activity we have been contacting and cooperating with the entire media in the state, we ask for support, and larger reporting from them about the Roma problematic in the education and its meaning.
  • We cooperate with representatives from government institutions who work within the frames of the Roma problematic.

For realization of the campaign we have received the support of the President of Republic of Macedonia, the deputy of the president of the RM Government, the Board for development and promotion of education of languages of members of the communities, the Ministry of labor and social politics, Radio diffusion Council, Macedonian Information Agency, Macedonian Media Institute, the Attorney Chamber of Macedonia, the city of Skopje, Municipalities Kumanovo, Prilep, Suto Orizari, Gorce Petrov, Cair and Gazi Baba.

Information about the organizer

The National Roma Center is a non governmental organization which cooperates with relevant actors and works for active participation and integration of the Roma, founding its work on the principles of modern multiethnic European society. The organization works as a voice of the Roma and protects the rights guaranteed for all of the citizens and development of a communication network. The purpose of NRC is solving of local, national and international problems and barriers of the Roma problematic.

Information about the donor

The Roma Education Fund is created within the frames of the Roma Decade. The purpose of the Roma Education Fund is to contribute for closing of the gap and educational differences between the Roma and the non Roma, through support of programs for support of quality education of the Roma population, including the issue for desegregation in the educational systems.
