The second thematic workshop on Roma housing was held in Albania

The housing workshop was held on February 26 – 28, 2014, in Tirana, Albania. Martina Asanovska, assistant in National Roma Centrum’s resource centre, attended the workshop where she presented the project “Legalisation of Roma housing” as a good practice in Macedonia.

The main goal of the project “Best practices for Roma integration” is to contribute to the integration of the Roma minority in Western Balkan, in accordance with the responsibilities of the beneficiaries as countries – participants in OSCE and potential members of the European Union.

The intention is to contribute to the main goal through the provision of analysis about the housing conditions of Roma from Western Balkan and through documentation of the good practices for learning about legalization of land and objects, upgrade of informal Roma settlements and provision of social apartments.

The final goal of the report is to give a summary of recommendations for dealing with the problem of Roma housing, which is based on the learned lessons from the ongoing practices in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo.

250 representatives, from countries for which the analysis in the report was made, attended the housing workshop.

In the regional report on legalization of housing, upgrade of settlements and social apartments for Roma in Western Balkan, the project “Legalisation of Roma housing” was referred as a type of practice.

The report is partitioned in three parts:

–       Housing situation of Roma in Western Balkan;

–       Good learning practices for integration of Roma in the housing sector;

–       Conclusions and recommendations.

From all the participating countries on the event, none of the organizations work on the legalisation of Roma housing with the same scale as the activities in the project “Legalisation of Roma housing”, and this caused great interest among the participants.
