Review of existing mechanisms for the integration of smaller communities at the local level

Cultural diversity in the country is built into the fundamental provisions of the state. Protecting and promoting the rights of different ethnic communities are guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Macedonia.

However, the integration of smaller communities in the economic, political and social spheres of the country has proved to be a particular challenge since the independence of the state, more than two decades ago. Although Macedonia has inherited a relatively broad framework in respect of the rights of ethnic communities, some challenges still remain. They relate mainly to the economic and political inclusion of these communities.

This report was prepared as part of the project “Improving the participation of small (er) communities at the local level.” The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the situation with the involvement and participation of the smaller communities at the local level.
